Unlimited Storage Pools
Unlike a traditional legacy file systems that either resides on a single device or uses multiple devices and a volume manager, ZFS is implemented on top of virtual storage pools, labeled the zpools. While most legacy solutions limit the file sizes, there are no such limitations with ZFS storage solution.
A pool is constructed from virtual devices (vdevs), each of which is either a raw device, a mirror(RAID 1), or a RAID-Z group. The storage capacity of all the vdevs are available to all of the file systems in the zpool. To limit the amount of space a file system can occupy, a quota can be applied, and to guarantee that space will be available to a specific file system, a reservation can be set.
